According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS:
The number of people with HIV in the world today: 33 million
The number of people under the age of 25 who become HIV positive every minute: 4
The number of seconds between each new HIV infection in the world: 12 seconds
The number of children infected with HIV every day: 1,014
The percentage of the population with HIV in the most AIDS-affected countries: more than 20
The percentage of the population in Canada affected with HIV: 0.3 percent

As can be seen, HIV predominantly affects those in Sub-Saharan Africa. Over two-thirds of the world's AIDS population reside in these developing nations; there are many reasons for this trend, some having to do with scientific basis, others, even, having to do with religious beliefs. However, one of the greatest reasons for this wide-scaled issue in subsaharent Africa is due to the lack of education and the inadequate amount of drug administeration. Of course, the levels of poverty do nothing to improve the living conditions of the African people.
